Book your appointmentLOVAZA® is a prescription medicine, called a lipid-regulating medicine, for adults. LOVAZA® is made of omega-3 fatty acids from oils of fish, such as salmon and mackerel. Omega-3 fatty acids are substances that your body needs but cannot produce itself.
LOVAZA® is used along with a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet to lower very high triglycerides (fats) in your blood. Before taking LOVAZA®, talk to your healthcare provider about how you can lower high blood fats by:
Treatment with LOVAZA® has not been shown to prevent heart attacks or strokes.
LOVAZA® has not been studied in children under the age of 18 years.
LOVAZA® is different from dietary supplements. Supplements are not FDA-approved to treat a specific disease like very high triglycerides.
LOVAZA® is potent. The FDA-approved dose of LOVAZA® is 4 capsules (4 grams) per day. It could take up to 14 capsules per day of an OTC omega-3 supplement to provide the same amount of active ingredients in LOVAZA®.

Talk to your doctor about any medical conditions you have and any medications you are taking, especially those that may increase your risk of bleeding. In some patients, LDL-cholesterol levels may increase. Your healthcare provider should do blood tests before and during treatment with LOVAZA® to check your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If you have liver disease, you may require additional monitoring. Possible side effects include burping, infection, flu-like symptoms, upset stomach and change in sense of taste.
LOVAZA® is a combination of ethyl esters of omega 3 fatty acids, principally eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride (TG) levels in adult patients with severe (≥500 mg/dL) hypertriglyceridemia. (1)

CONTRAINDICATIONS
LOVAZA® is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylactic reaction) to LOVAZA® or any of its components. (4)

The most common adverse reactions (incidence >3% and greater than placebo) were eructation, dyspepsia, and taste perversion. (6)
