How to collect my blood spot
sample (with video)

How to collect my blood spot sample
(written instructions)

Step 1

Let’s get organized

Get familiar with the kit before we get down to business. The Blood Test should contain these
items:

ADX blood
collection card
Alcohol
pads
Sterile
gauze pads
Single
use lancets
Adhesive
bandages
Blood
sample pouch

Take the ADX blood collection card and write your name, date of birth, and collection date in
MM/DD/YYYY format where prompted. Now you're ready to start self-testing!

Step 2

Now onto the sample collection

It might look intimidating, but we have faith in you. You got this!

Warm up, prep your test, and wash your hands

Get your blood flowing by drinking plenty of water before-hand! Do a set of jumping jacks, or swing your arms by your side. Place the collection card on a clean and dry surface, making sure to only touch the edges of the card. Then give your hands a good wash with warm water.

Clean your fingertip and prick with lancet

Clean your fingertip with the alcohol pad. Try using the middle or ring finger of your non-dominant hand. Then, take a lancet and twist the cap off. Press the small tip into the side of your finger near the tip, until the needle ejects with a click. Keep your hand below your heart to help the blood flow.

Fill collection card past the first line

Wipe away the first drop of blood with a gauze pad. Add 4–7 large drops to the left square of the card (top-left if there are two strips), or enough blood to pass the first line. Samples that do not pass the line cannot be analyzed. If needed, use a new finger and lancet. Do not add blood after the sample has dried, as this will invalidate the test.

Repeat with the second collection strip if applicable, and dry

Your card can have one or two collection strips on it. Repeat the steps above for the second strip if applicable, ensuring again that the blood fills past the first line. Once all strips have been filled, put a bandaid on your finger. Let the card air dry for one hour.

Package samples

Tear open the blood sample return pouch provided. Do not remove any of the contents inside. Place the dried card in the bag and seal. Congrats, you're done! Keep the sample out of extreme temperatures (above 100F or below 32F) before you ship.

Step 3

Pack it up!

Go over the checklist below to ensure your sample is ready to ship.

Signed your name, date of birth, and collection date on the card
Filled to the first line on all collection strips on the card
Placed collection card in the blood sample return pouch

(You can put more than one card in this bag)

Put the blood sample return pouch back into the kit box

To return your kit, simply close the box, place the box inside the return envelope, and drop off
at your local mail carrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I receive my testing kit?

Orders are fulfilled within 1-2 business days depending on the time of order placement. Test kits ship out USPS Ground Advantage, which typically delivers in 2-5 business days, depending on your location. You will first receive a notification (via email, text message, and/or your LifeMD patient portal) when your kit ships — and again when it’s delivered.

What should I do when my kit arrives?

Each kit includes written step-by-step instructions on collecting your sample, packaging it up, and shipping it to the lab for analysis. For additional support, please reference this detailed video. Have a question about the testing process? Reach out to the LifeMD customer support team at (800) 852-1575 or [email protected]

What should I do if I think my kit is missing materials?

If you believe your testing kit is missing materials, please call (800) 852-1575 or email [email protected] and a LifeMD patient support agent will coordinate the shipment of replacement items at no cost.

What are collection labels, and why are they needed?

Collection labels are the stickers placed on each collection device. These labels are used to match a patient’s sample with the electronic lab order, verify identity, and confirm stability of the sample. You must fill out your full name, date of birth, and the date and time of collection for the lab to process the order. If labels are not filled out, your results may be delayed or denied for processing.

Do I need to fast before collecting my sample?

Fasting is recommended before tests for glucose (blood sugar) and triglycerides (part of a cholesterol, or lipid, panel). These test(s) are included in our standard panels for the Weight Management Program (GLP-1 and Triple Therapy). In these cases, please avoid eating or drinking anything other than water eight hours prior to collecting your sample. For all other lab tests, please consult with the LifeMD care team. Fasting is generally acceptable unless advised otherwise.

Does it matter when I take a panel that includes a testosterone test?

Yes. Testosterone levels can fluctuate throughout the day and may be influenced by factors such as exercise and amount of sleep. It is recommended to conduct the test in the early morning, and to maintain consistency in timing for any repeat testing.

How quickly do I need to return my sample?

The lab must process samples within 15 to 30 days of collection, depending on the exact tests being run. This will ensure the stability and integrity of the sample. If a sample exceeds its stability window, or if it is deemed compromised by other means, the lab will reject the sample. To be safe, we recommend patients return their kit as soon as possible after collecting.

Can I return my sample without the box?

No. Per safety regulations, samples must be returned in the box provided. If you have thrown out or misplaced your box, please contact LifeMD patient support at (800) 852-1575 or email [email protected] to coordinate a replacement.

Is there any charge to return my kit?

No. All kits include a poly mailer with a prepaid return shipping label addressed to the appropriate lab. You just need to package your kit inside the poly mailer and drop it off at the nearest USPS location.

What if there is an issue with my sample?

In many cases, your sample can be recovered and processed by the lab. The lab will place a temporary hold on your sample while a patient support agent contacts you to try and resolve the issue. If a sample cannot be recovered (e.g., there is insufficient sample to process), the agent will reach out to discuss replacement options. Please note: depending on the nature of the issue, there may be an additional charge to replace the kit.

How long does it take for the lab to process my results?

Once the lab receives your sample, it typically takes 3-5 days to process.

How will I know when my results are ready and where can I access them?

You will receive a notification via email, LifeMD patient portal , and/or text message when your lab results are available for viewing. Lab results are posted to the “Labs & Imaging” section of “My Chart” in your LifeMD patient portal. Please note that lab results may not be immediately reviewed by your provider and will likely be discussed during your next virtual consultation. Please consult a local healthcare provider if immediate care is needed.

How should I interpret the results of an at-home testosterone test?

Several factors should be considered when interpreting the results of an at-home testosterone test. Patients are encouraged to consult with a provider to fully understand their results. Here are some important considerations:

  • Each laboratory has somewhat different “normal reference ranges” for testosterone (the low and high values that are considered “normal") due to variations in equipment used to process the sample — as well as different sample collection methods (i.e. capillary vs. intravenous). Therefore, at-home test results should not be compared directly to test results from commercial labs like Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp, or hospital labs.
  • If results are being compared between labs, patients and providers typically focus on whether the patient is “in range” or “low or high” as opposed to the exact result value. The easiest way to avoid confusion is to have all of your testosterone tests done with the same lab.
What level of testosterone is considered abnormally low?

The specific level of testosterone that is considered low is typically influenced by a number of factors including: age, time of day, and presence or absence of chronic medical conditions — as well as whether or not a patient has symptoms consistent with low testosterone. Symptoms of low testosterone include: reduced libido, low energy, erectile dysfunction, decreased muscle mass/strength, mood changes, reduced bone mass, and hair loss. Patients should always consult with their healthcare provider to interpret the results of the at-home testosterone test.
