Coreg (carvedilol) is a prescription medication used to relax blood vessels and slow the heart rate. Its active ingredient is carvedilol. It’s typically used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure. A healthcare provider may also prescribe Coreg to improve the chances of survival after a heart attack. It’s taken as an oral tablet once daily or as an extended-release capsule twice daily with food.
Carvedilol is a beta blocker. This class of medications prevents heart failure and lowers blood pressure by regulating blood flow resistance in the small arteries and preventing contractions in smooth muscles within the blood vessels.

The standard dosage for carvedilol ranges from 3.125 milligrams (mg) to 25 mg twice daily. Your healthcare provider may increase your dosage over time depending on what part of your heart health they want to target.
Stopping carvedilol suddenly during treatment can lead to a risk of hypotension (low blood pressure). Otherwise, carvedilol is generally safe for most people. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are taking other medications or experiencing any side effects.
Be sure to ask your healthcare provider about alcohol intake while taking carvedilol. Drinking alcohol while on carvedilol can worsen side effects.
It may be unsafe to take carvedilol while also taking antidepressants. Taking carvedilol with antidepressants may increase the risk of hypotension and bradycardia (the heart rate is slower than usual). Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are taking other medications before starting carvedilol.
The most common side effects of Carvedilol include:
It’s important to know not everyone will experience the same side effects. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects like fainting, swelling, shortness of breath, and weight gain.
Although carvedilol can prevent high blood pressure, speak with your healthcare provider about taking Coreg during pregnancy. More research is still needed on its possible effects on pregnancy.
