Keflex can also reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control options. If you are on hormonal birth control, speak with your healthcare provider about additional options while taking Keflex.
The maximum recommended dosage of 500 mg is a stronger dose for severe infections. Cephalexin can treat a wide range of bacterial infections. You can either take 250 mg (milligrams) every six hours or a stronger dose of 500 mg dose every 12 hours to treat more severe infections.
How well Keflex (doxycycline) or cephalexin works for you depends on the type of infection being treated. Both medications are effective in treating bacterial infections.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take Keflex (cephalexin) during your pregnancy.
The most common side effects of cephalexin include:
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking Keflex (cephalexin). If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects of cephalexin include:
- Watery or bloody stool
- Hallucinations
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling
- Hives
- Itching
- Rash
- Infection

It’s not recommended to drink while taking Keflex, since it can worsen side effects.
Keflex (cephalexin) may interact with other antibiotics and medications with penicillin as an ingredient.
