The recommended dosage for montelukast sodium varies depending on the condition being treated. If taking montelukast sodium to manage breathing problems while exercising with asthma, take montelukast sodium at least two hours before exercising. Montelukast sodium for allergic rhinitis and asthma is taken daily. Ideally, take Singulair for asthma later in the day.
Health experts do not recommend taking more than one dose within a 24 hour period. If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
A healthcare provider may not recommend montelukast sodium if you have a history of liver disease. Health experts do not recommend giving montelukast sodium to children without a doctor’s recommendation.
As with any medication, it’s possible to be allergic to montelukast sodium. Be sure to let a licensed healthcare provider know if you experience an allergic reaction while taking Singulair.
Montelukast sodium is not a controlled substance.
Montelukast sodium should not be used to treat an asthma attack. A healthcare provider is more likely to prescribe short-acting inhalers to treat a sudden asthma attack.

Weight gain is not a common symptom of montelukast sodium.
Generally, montelukast sodium is safe for long-term asthma treatment.
Montelukast sodiumcan begin working within the first few hours of taking the medication.
There are no known interactions with montelukast sodium and certain foods.
The following common side effects may occur while taking montelukast sodium:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Heartburn
- Abdominal pain
Some people may experience severe side effects while taking montelukast sodium like:
- Trouble breathing
- Skin rashes
- Swelling sinuses
- Ear pain
As with any medication, it’s possible to experience an allergic reaction to montelukast sodium. Be sure to let a healthcare provider know if you start to experience allergic reactions while taking montelukast sodium. While rare, some people may also experience mood swings and irritability while taking Singulair.
Montelukast sodium may negatively interact with Gemfibrozil (Lopid) and Rifamycin (Rifadin). Be sure to let your healthcare provider know about all of the medications or supplements you are taking before starting Singulair.
While it’s possible, the risk of overdose on Singulair is extremely low. Be sure to seek emergency help right away if you suspect you or a loved one may have accidentally overdosed on medication.
