Sarecycline is an antibiotic in the tetracycline class. It’s taken by mouth as a tablet and is mainly used to treat moderate to severe acne.
Sarecycline works by blocking bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply. Without these proteins, the bacteria can’t survive, which helps reduce the inflammation and breakouts seen in acne.
It belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics but is more targeted, meaning it’s designed to work mainly against the bacteria that contribute to acne while having less impact on other bacteria in the body.
You may qualify for sarecycline if you have moderate to severe acne, haven’t responded well to topical treatments alone, and your doctor confirms it’s safe with your health history and other medications.
It’s generally prescribed for people nine years and older and may not be suitable if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to tetracyclines.

No, sarecycline is not penicillin. It’s a tetracycline-class antibiotic, which works differently from penicillin. However, like penicillin, it’s used to treat bacterial infections — in sarecycline’s case, mainly acne-causing bacteria.
Sarecycline usually starts reducing acne within a few weeks, but most people see clearer improvement after about eight to 12 weeks of consistent use. Your doctor will typically recommend giving it a few months to see full results.
Sarecycline and other antibiotics in the tetracycline class pose significant risks during pregnancy and are generally not recommended for use in pregnancy.
You can usually drink alcohol while taking sarecycline, as there’s no dangerous interaction. However, alcohol may worsen side effects like nausea or dizziness and can slow acne healing. It’s safest to keep drinking light or avoid it, especially if you notice side effects.
The most common side effects of sarecycline include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. Some people may also experience skin reactions like mild rash or itching. Most side effects are mild and often improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
