Sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory medication. It treats ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. Sulfasalazine is available as regular and delayed-release tablets.
Sulfasalazine works by reducing inflammation in the body by modulating the immune system and decreasing the production of inflammatory chemicals, which helps relieve symptoms of conditions like ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
A healthcare provider may prescribe sulfasalazine to treat inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, it may also be used for certain types of inflammatory bowel disease or to treat polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children. A provider will determine if sulfasalazine is appropriate based on your diagnosis and medical history.

A healthcare provider will determine the proper dosage of sulfasalazine based on your condition, symptoms, and overall health. Sulfasalazine is commonly prescribed in 500 mg tablets, with the dose adjusted as needed. It is typically taken with water and after meals to help reduce stomach side effects.
If you miss a dose of sulfasalazine, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to your next scheduled dose. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.
A healthcare provider may not prescribe sulfasalazine for those with a history of intestinal obstruction, urinary obstruction, or porphyria.
As with any medication, allergic reactions are also possible, so contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice symptoms such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing while taking sulfasalazine.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, tell your healthcare provider before taking sulfasalazine. While studies on its safety in pregnancy are limited, a provider can determine whether it is appropriate for you and may recommend additional monitoring if needed.
Drinking alcohol while taking sulfasalazine may increase your risk of gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset. It’s best to avoid alcohol while on this medication.
Common side effects of sulfasalazine are usually mild and may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, or upset stomach.
Severe side effects from sulfasalazine are rare, but seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Rare but serious side effects can also include liver problems, blood disorders, or seizures.
Sulfasalazine may interact with the following medications:
Yes, it’s possible to overdose on sulfasalazine. If you believe you or someone you know may have taken too much, seek emergency medical attention or contact a poison control center right away.
Sulfasalazine may take two to four weeks before you notice an improvement in symptoms, as it gradually reduces inflammation in the body. It’s important to continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if you don’t feel immediate effects.
