Omnicef is a prescription medication used to stop harmful strains of bacteria from penetrating healthy cells. Its active ingredient is cefdinir. Cefdinir is a type of antibiotic that targets bacterial infections. It’s typically used to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, and other bacterial infections (in the skin, ear, sinuses, tonsils, and throat). Omnicef is taken as an oral capsule or in liquid form.
Cefdinir works through cell wall synthesis — a process antibiotics perform in the body to prevent harmful bacteria from growing. It interferes with how bacteria build their cell walls, making it tough for them to keep their shape and survive, ultimately causing them to die off.

Having certain gastrointestinal conditions can worsen side effects while taking Omnicef. Cefdinir may also reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control.
Cefdinir can treat various bacterial infections including UTIs (urinary tract infections) caused by harmful bacteria.
The effects of cefdinir may be experienced a couple of days after starting treatment. It’s important to continue taking the medication according to instructions from a healthcare provider even if you notice symptoms disappear.
Cefdinir does not need to be refrigerated. Store it in a cool, dry environment with minimal moisture.
Be sure to avoid eating foods high in iron at the same time that you take cefdinir. It’s also recommended to not consume dairy and other calcium-rich foods and beverages at least two hours before taking cefdinir.
While there’s not much research showing cefdinir affects pregnancy or breast milk, be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while taking Omnicef (cefdinir).
It’s generally not recommended to drink alcohol while taking medications. However, research does not show any adverse effects connected to drinking alcohol while taking cefdinir.
Taking medications like cefdinir and other antibiotics before you feel sick can cause antibiotic resistance. This makes it less likely that antibiotics will be effective when you actually feel sick.
The most common side effects of Omnicef include:
Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are experiencing any symptoms while taking cefdinir.
How long side effects last depends on the severity of the infection. Some side effects like nausea as long as five to 10 days. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have symptoms that persist for that long.
