While clonidine is often used before surgery, speak with your healthcare provider about taking clonidine before surgery.
Clonidine is not a controlled substance. There is currently no evidence of an increased risk for addiction.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take clonidine. Speak with your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking the medication.
It’s not recommended to drink while taking clonidine. It may worsen the side effects of the medication. It’s also important to stay hydrated while taking the medication.
While you may see symptoms improve within the first couple of days, clonidine does not fully work into the body until four to eight weeks of using the medication.
The most common side effects of clonidine include:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Nervousness
- Decreased sexual libido
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting
- Muscle weakness
It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking clonidine. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects that can happen while taking clonidine include:
- Rash
- Fainting
- Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
- Hoarseness
- Swelling
- Hives
Be sure to speak with a healthcare provider immediately if you experience any severe side effects.
