Catapres is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure. Clonidine can also treat symptoms of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), menopausal hot flashes, alcohol withdrawal, and dysmenorrhea (severe menstrual cramps). Its active ingredient is clonidine.
Clonidine can be consumed as a standard tablet, extended-release tablet, or extended-release liquid with or without food. Extended-release tablets are taken once or twice daily depending on the condition being treated. In its liquid form, clonidine is usually only taken once at bedtime.
Clonidine works by decreasing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily throughout the body.
