It’s not recommended to take enalapril if you have a heart condition or heart-related complications. As with other medications, it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to angiotensin converting enzymes (ACEs) like enalapril.
Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have a history of heart problems, liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or a low white blood cell count while taking enalapril (Vasotec).
A healthcare provider may start you off with 5 mg (milligrams) of enalapril. Over time, they may increase your dosage to a maximum dosage of 40 mg. Enalapril may be prescribed in lower dosages when used in combination with other medications. Doses may vary depending on treatment goals.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take enalapril (Vasotec) during your pregnancy.
It is not recommended to drink while taking enalapril. Drinking while on the medication may increase your risk of low blood pressure.
Blood pressure medications like enalapril can begin working in the first 24 hours.
The most common side effects of enalapril include:
- Dehydration
- Cough
- Headache
- Low blood pressure
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Nausea
It’s recommended to drink plenty of water while taking enalapril. Not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking enalapril. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects that can happen while taking enalapril include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Sweating
- Low blood pressure
- Kidney failure
Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are taking enalapril before going into surgery.
Enalapril may interact with the following medications:
- Aliskiren (Tekturna)
- Valsartan (Entresto)
- Potassium supplements
- Diuretics
- NSAIDs
- Blood pressure medications
Be sure to let your healthcare provider know all of the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking before starting a prescription for enalapril.
It’s not recommended to take two doses at once. If you miss a dose, you can continue with the next scheduled dose as usual.
