Esomeprazole comes in a variety of dosages ranging from 2.5 milligrams (mg) to 49.3 mg. The most common dosage for treating adults with GERD is 20 mg daily.
As with any other medication, there is a chance you may have an allergic reaction to esomeprazole.
Weight gain isn’t a common symptom of esomeprazole, but it can occur. Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your weight
Esomeprazole may take one to four days to alleviate heartburn. Be sure to finish the medication as instructed by your healthcare provider even if you start to feel better.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take esomeprazole during your pregnancy. Small amounts of esomeprazole may also leak into breast milk.
Drinking alcohol while taking esomeprazole increases the risk of stomach bleeding and a buildup of acid in the stomach. Esomeprazole may also irritate the stomach lining.
While esomeprazole may be slightly stronger than omeprazole at reducing acid in the stomach, there are no significant differences in the effectiveness of the medications.
Esomeprazole (Nexium) can stay in the body for an average of 24 hours. It can begin working as soon as an hour after taking the medication.
Esomeprazole is not a controlled substance.
The most common side effects of esomeprazole include:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Gas
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness
- Erectile dysfunction
It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking esomeprazole. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects of esomeprazole may include:
- Shortness of breath
- Lightheadedness
- Sweating
- Dizziness
- Sudden weight loss
- Bloody stool
- Vomiting
- Rashes
- Blisters
Other severe side effects you may experience are low magnesium levels. Esomeprazole may result in wrist, hip, or spine fractures. Be sure to discuss any serious side effects you have with your healthcare provider.
Esomeprazole may interact with the following medications and supplements:
- Iron supplements
- St. John’s wort
- TUMS (calcium carbonate)
- Atazanavir (Reyataz)
- Acalabrutinib (Calquence)
- Blood thinners
- Diazepam (Valium)
Some pain medications may moderately interact with esomeprazole. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking other medications while on esomeprazole.
If you miss a dose near the time of your next dose, continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose at a time.
