Generally, fenofibrate is not recommended for children.
Fenofibrate (Tricor) is not a controlled substance.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take fenofibrate during your pregnancy. Fenofibrate can leak into breastmilk and potentially harm the health of a newborn.
It’s not recommended to drink alcohol while taking fenofibrate. An increase in alcohol consumption may increase your risk of high triglyceride levels and liver damage.
The typical dosage for fenofibrate varies depending on the type of condition being treated. On average, fenofibrate (Tricor) is taken at a dosage of 48 milligrams (mg) a day. A healthcare provider may increase the dosage to a maximum average of 145 mg daily.
Generally, fenofibrate is safe for long-term use as part of a combination treatment plan. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider about long-term use of fenofibrate.
Weight gain is not a common side effect of fenofibrate.
If approved by your healthcare provider, you can take fenofibrate with statins.
Febofibrate may start working immediately after your first dose. However, you may not start to see results until two to three months after starting the medication.
The most common side effects of fenofibrate include:
- Muscle pain
- Heartburn
- Headache
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Joint pain
- Runny nose

It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking fenofibrate. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects that can happen while taking fenofibrate may include the following:
- Blisters
- Redness

Be sure to reach out to a healthcare provider if you experience any of the symptoms listed. If you have trouble breathing, consider seeking emergency assistance.

- Blood thinners
- Cancer medications
- Steroids

If you miss a dose, be careful not to take two doses at the same time. Unless it is near the time of your next scheduled dose, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
It’s recommended to follow a low cholesterol diet while taking fenofibrate to reduce the risk of high cholesterol while taking the medication. Your healthcare provider may recommend certain foods to keep your cholesterol levels under control.
