The typical recommended dosage of mometasone furoate is 100 mcg (micrograms) or two sprays in each nostril once daily. A healthcare provider may recommend those with seasonal allergies to start taking Nasonex two to four weeks before the start of pollen season.
Never take more than one dose at one time. Wait until your next scheduled dose if you miss a dose and don’t remember to take it soon after your scheduled dose.
A healthcare provider may not recommend Nasonex if you have the following:
- A history of nasal trauma
- Nasal ulcers
- Nasal surgery
- Untreated infections
- Tuberculosis
Those with a weakened immune system may be more likely to get an infection while taking mometasone furoate.
Both OTC and prescription-strength mometasone furoate can treat seasonal allergies. However, the prescription version of the medication is not prescribed to children under the age of 12.
Nasonex (mometasone furoate) is not a controlled substance. It’s available for over-the-counter use.
While there are not any major risks of birth defects known, be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant before starting mometasone furoate.
Generally, you can drink while taking Nasonex. Be sure to check with a licensed healthcare provider if you are taking Nasonex frequently.
Weight gain is not a common symptom of Nasonex.

Some people may experience severe side effects while taking Nasonex like:
- Fungal infections
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Nasal septum perforation
- Slow wound healing
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Weakened immune system
As with any medication, it’s possible to experience an allergic reaction to mometasone furoate. Be sure to let a healthcare provider know if you start to experience allergic reactions while taking mometasone furoate.
Taking the following medications while taking Nasonex may increase your risk of side effects: HIV medications Antifungal medications Antibiotics Antidepressants Cobicistat-containing products
