You should not take Premarin if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Hormones from the medication can potentially pass into breast milk.
Premarin cream has not been discontinued in the U.S., but it must be prescribed by a healthcare provider.
While weight gain is not a common symptom of Premarin, some people may see their weight fluctuate while taking the medication.
It’s not recommended to drink while taking Premarin. This may increase your risk of serious side effects.
The most common side effects of Premarin include:

- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Yeast infections

- Ovarian cancer
- Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)
- Blood clots
- Breast cancer
- Fibroids
- Heart attack
- Stroke
People over the age of 65 may have an increased risk of dementia. Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any serious side effects.
Premarin may interact with progestins (synthetic progesterone). Using estrogens with progestins may increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer, and blood clots. If you take thyroid medications, your healthcare provider may suggest adjusting your dosage while taking Premarin.
