Frequently asked questions
Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have experienced addiction in the past. They may recommend an alternative medication to carisoprodol because of the risk of dependency on the drug. Carisoprodol is not recommended for people with a history of porphyria — an inherited blood disorder.
If you become pregnant while taking carisoprodol, tell your healthcare provider right away. Although carisoprodol may not affect pregnancy, carisoprodol can leak into breast milk and affect a baby.
It’s generally recommended to limit your alcohol intake while taking carisoprodol. Drinking alcohol while taking carisoprodol may increase potential side effects.
Taking other central nervous system (CNS) depressants like opioids and benzodiazepines can cause sedation and other potential side effects when taken with carisoprodol. Certain herbs and vitamins may also interact with carisoprodol.
The most common side effects of Soma include:
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sedation
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Accelerated heart rate
It’s important to note that not everyone will experience the same side effects. If you have concerns about potential side effects, consult your healthcare provider. Seek emergency assistance if you experience seizures and difficulty breathing.
Carisoprodol is not intended for long-term use. There is an increased risk of addiction to this type of drug when used for more than two to three weeks. Speak with your healthcare provider right away if you develop withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing the use of carisoprodol. Be careful not to use carisoprodol for longer than recommended by your healthcare provider.
Carisoprodol is a schedule IV controlled substance. This means it has a limited risk of physical or psychological dependency.
