Frequently asked questions
In young adults and children, there is an increased risk of suicidal ideation and worsening depression while taking citalopram. Citalopram is not recommended for people with a history of cardiovascular conditions like QT syndrome, arrhythmia, and heart failure.
Citalopram may be unsafe for people with a history of seizures, kidney disease, or liver disease.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take citalopram.
It is not recommended to drink while taking Celexa (citalopram). Drinking alcohol while taking citalopram may worsen side effects. In some cases, citalopram is used to treat alcoholism.
Citalopram is not a controlled substance.
Everyone reacts differently to citalopram. It may make you lose your appetite at the beginning. As your body adjusts to the medication, you may gain weight.
You may first start feeling the medication working between one to four weeks after starting the medication. You will feel the full effects of the medication within four to eight weeks of taking it.
Side effects of citalopram include:
- Heartburn
- Low libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Frequent urination
- Stomach pain
- Weight loss
- Nausea
- Vomiting
If you experience any symptoms, speak with your healthcare provider right away. Not everyone will experience side effects while taking citalopram.
Citalopram may interact with other medications including:
- Wellbutrin (bupropion)
- Prilosec (omeprazole)
- Prozac (fluoxetine)
- Nexium (esomeprazole)
- Diflucan (fluconazole)
- Tagamet HB (cimetidine)
- Fexinidazole
- Vfend (voriconazole)
It can also interact with other SSRIs like Lexapro (escitalopram). Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are taking any other medications.
