A healthcare provider will recommend a proper dosage of sertraline based on your treatment needs. Generally, sertraline tablets are available in 25 to 100 mg (milligrams). It’s also available as a 20 mg/mL liquid solution.
Health experts do not recommend taking more than one dose within a 24 hour period. If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
A healthcare provider may not recommend sertraline if you have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or one of the following health conditions:
- Low levels of potassium in your blood
- Seizures
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Heart disease
Sertraline is often prescribed as an off-label medication for premature ejaculation.
Be sure to let a healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Taking sertraline while pregnant may be harmful to the health of the child.
It’s not recommended to drink alcohol while taking sertraline.
You may experience the following side effects while taking sertraline:
- Mood swings

More severe potential side effects of sertraline include:
- Suicidal ideation

- Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
