Common side effects of duloxetine include:

It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking duloxetine. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects of duloxetine include:
- High blood pressure
- Vision problems
- Nausea
- Eye pain
- Swelling around the eye
- Fainting
- Redness around the eye
- Abnormal bleeding
Some may experience weight loss or weight gain while taking Cymbalta (duloxetine).
Be sure to reach out to a healthcare provider or seek emergency care if you experience severe side effects. Other side effects that may require immediate medical attention include jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), fever, or difficulty swallowing.
Cymbalta is a brand name version of duloxetine. T Duloxetine takes around six to eight weeks to activate in the body. While you may start to see improvements in the first two weeks, it’s important to finish the medication as instructed by your healthcare provider.
Take the missed dose of duloxetine as soon as you remember. If you don’t remember until it’s time to take your next dose, you can skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Taking a double dose is not recommended to make up for a missed one.
Drinking alcohol while taking duloxetine may increase your risk of severe side effects.
Duloxetine is not recommended for children under the age of seven. Be sure to discuss your health history thoroughly with your healthcare provider. Those with depression or other mental health conditions may experience an increased risk of suicidal ideation. It’s also important to let a healthcare provider know if you are taking duloxetine before going into surgery.
A healthcare provider may also prescribe an alternate medication if you have the following health conditions:
- Alcoholism
- Glaucoma
- A history of heart attacks
- Seizures
- High blood pressure
- Kidney disease
- Heart disease
- Liver disease
A healthcare provider may suggest additional tests and guidance if you have diabetes.
Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you plan on becoming pregnant. Duloxetine may lead to health problems in a newborn baby if taken during the last few months of pregnancy.
The following medications may interact with duloxetine:
- Thioridazine
- isocarboxazid (Marplan)
- Linezolid (Zyvox)
- Methylene blue
- Phenelzine (Nardil)
- Selegiline (Emsam, Zelapar)
- Tranylcypromine (Parnate)
Certain herbal products and nonprescription drugs like tryptophan, aspirin, and St. John’s wort may also interact with duloxetine. Be sure to discuss medications you are considering taking with your healthcare provider. They may suggest adjusting dosages or using alternative medication options.
