Saxenda® vs. Wegovy®: Which Weight Loss Medication is Right for You?
Saxenda® and Wegovy® are FDA-approved, clinically proven GLP-1 medications that work through the same general mechanism. But they're not the same drug, and the differences between them are worth understanding before you have a conversation with your provider.
This guide breaks down how each medication works, what the research shows, and how to think about which one might be the better fit for your health goals and lifestyle.

What Saxenda® and Wegovy® Have in Common
Saxenda® and Wegovy® belong to the same class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They mimic the GLP-1 hormone to reduce appetite, slow gastric emptying, and help regulate blood sugar. Saxenda® and Wegovy® are FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. They're also both approved for adolescents aged 12 and older, making them two of the few prescription weight loss options available to younger patients.
How Saxenda® and Wegovy® Differ
While Saxenda® and Wegovy® share a drug class and manufacturer, the differences between them are meaningful and worth understanding before making any decisions about treatment.
Active ingredient
Saxenda® contains liraglutide while Wegovy® contains semaglutide. Both are GLP-1 receptor agonists, but they're distinct molecules with different molecular structures, different half-lives, and different efficacy profiles. Semaglutide – the active ingredient in Wegovy® – has a longer half-life, which is part of what makes once-weekly dosing possible.
Dosing frequency
Saxenda® is administered once daily. Wegovy® is administered once weekly. For some patients, a daily routine feels easier to stay consistent with. For others, a once-weekly injection is a more manageable commitment. It's a personal preference worth discussing with your provider.
Format
Saxenda® is available as an injectable only. Wegovy® is available in two formats: the original once-weekly injectable and an oral pill approved in December 2025. The Wegovy® pill does require specific timing – it must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with a waiting period before eating or drinking. For patients who want to avoid injections entirely, the oral option is worth knowing about.
Efficacy
Efficacy is where the two medications diverge most significantly. In a clinical trial, adults taking Saxenda® at the full 3 mg dose lost an average of 8.4% of their body weight over 56 weeks. On the other hand, research has shown that adults taking Wegovy® at the full 2.4 mg dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. That difference is one of the primary reasons Wegovy® has become the more widely prescribed of the two for weight management in recent years.
It's worth noting that there have been no direct head-to-head trials comparing Saxenda® and Wegovy®, so these figures come from separate studies with different patient populations and trial designs. Individual results vary, and average weight loss in a clinical trial doesn't predict what any one patient will experience.
Titration schedule
Both medications require a gradual dose escalation to minimize side effects, but the timelines differ. Saxenda® titrates up to its full dose of 3 mg over approximately five weeks. Wegovy®'s titration is more gradual, reaching its full dose of 2.4 mg over 16 weeks. The slower titration with Wegovy® is generally associated with better GI tolerability over time.
Wegovy® also offers a higher dose maintenance option. Wegovy® HD delivers a maximum maintenance dose of 7.2 mg once weekly, starting at week 21 and beyond. It's indicated for adult patients who have tolerated the 2.4 mg dose for at least four weeks and for whom additional weight reduction is clinically appropriate. This option provides a higher-ceiling option for patients who are responding well to treatment but haven't yet reached their weight loss goals.

How Do Saxenda® and Wegovy® Side Effects Compare?
Saxenda® and Wegovy® share a similar side effect profile. Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most commonly reported for both and may include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
Stomach pain
These side effects are typically mild and occur during the early titration phase when your body is still adjusting to the medication. For most patients, these symptoms improve over time as the dose increases gradually.
Both medications also carry a boxed warning for the potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors and should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Additional warnings – including pancreatitis, acute kidney injury, hypoglycemia, and gallbladder disease – apply to both as well.
Wegovy®'s more gradual titration schedule may make GI side effects easier to manage for some patients compared to Saxenda®. That said, individual tolerance varies considerably, and side effect experience is highly personal.
